Carey McKinley - Pilates Teaching Credentials:
First introduced to Pilates in the late 90s as a supplement to her dance training and performing, Carey practiced with Martha Mason, the first nationally-certified Pilates instructor in the Boston area. In 2008, Carey was certified by Kathy Van Patten in Power Pilates Mat, and she studied "The Dynamic Pelvis" with the legendary Irene Dowd - integrating Pilates with Dowd principles. Carey taught Pilates Mat classes at Boston University in 2008-2010 and incorporated Pilates into her dance and conditioning classes at Cambridge School of Weston, The Winsor School, Walnut Hill School for the Arts and as a substitute for Boston Ballet conditioning classes over the next 15 years.

In 2023, Carey completed 50-hour intensive training in Stott Pilates Reformer at Northeast Pilates in Beverly, MA and practiced with Mara Iancovici in Newton. Carey purchased a Merrithew V2 Max Pro Reformer given how much of an impact she experienced. Her personal reformer practice has been a prominent part of her wellness regime, allowing her to continue dancing into her 50s. "The strength I derive from the reformer has kept my muscles balanced and conditioned, and keeps me from injury in dance training, teaching and performing." Carey shares her love of the reformer through private lessons in her downtown Gloucester studio.
Carey received a Master of Fine Arts in Dance from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where she studied Iyengar Yoga, Laban Movement Analysis, Alexander Technique, Anatomy & Kinesiology, Bartenieff Fundamentals and Dance Pedagogy, among other dance techniques and history. Additional somatic training that influences Carey's teaching includes practicing yoga sporadically over 30 years; studying Irene Dowd Sequences with Peggy Gould; studying pedagogy with Bill Evans and Lynn Simonson; practicing dynamic movement with Sara Rudner, Bebe Miller, Reggie Wilson, Dance Education Laboratory, Trisha Brown's company, Jonathan Wolken of Pilobolus, and so many others! Over the past 25 years, Carey has taught movement and dance at prominent Boston area schools and universities, performed nationally and abroad with various dance companies, and received national commissions for her choreography. All of this experience and breadth of knowledge influences Carey's approach.
Carey's teaching is infused with musicality, imagery, simplicity, whole-body coordination and joy from decades of training, performing and teaching modern dance, ballet, jazz, Afro-Brazilian, improvisation and the choreographies of legendary dancers. Carey seeks to help her clients find a grounded sense of stability, more ease of movement. a sense of rhythm, less pain and more joy in their movement. Come try a few sessions and see how empowering the work can be.
